5 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Pursuing A Hospitality Career

What an honor it would be to be part of one of the largest industries in the world! Hospitality careers are both exciting and rewarding. So, it’s not surprising that too many people rush into a decision without having enough information. Yes, there is currently a pandemic, and it’s easy to get pulled into “hot” careers. Nevertheless, these are the times that you should carefully consider your options before taking the first step. Before enrolling in a hospitality school, have a seat, relax, and consider the following questions:

1. Do I like working with people?

We had to put this question at the beginning of the list, because, as you know, you definitely have to be okay with being surrounded by people. That is what hospitality is all about, providing warm and generous service to guests. Realizing that you will have to empathize and truly make your patrons feel understood is something you need to take into consideration – patience is key in this line of work. However, if you are the introverted type, don’t get discouraged. There are still in-demand jobs in the hospitality industry such as Digital Marketing and Information and Communications Technology.

2. What is my personality type?

Is your personality aligned with what’s required in this type of career? It is not just about being a people person. What you need to know is that in becoming a successful hotelier, you need to display and practice a strong commitment, hard work, professionalism, leadership skills and good character. You must be the type that likes to finish what he started. If you feel like you need to develop your persona more, enrolling in a reputable tourism and hospitality school can provide good training before you enter the real world.

3. What am I willing to be flexible about?

Working in the service industry isn’t for everyone due to the erratic nature of the work. If you are one of those who thinks that a 9-5 routine is “boring”, well we have news for you! The majority of those who are employed in hospitality jobs often work longer and more unconventional hours than the traditional desk job. You must always be game. This may mean that you will be working on holidays. Demonstrating versatility makes you invaluable to employers and will contribute incredibly to your long-term career success.

4. Am I a team player?

Like many other jobs, you will need to work in a team, as a team. You should be able to obey orders, as well as lead when necessary. You must be up for a challenge and learn to respect your peers. Speaking your thoughts in discussions that can help contribute to the organization’s overall goals is a must. Most of the team members who are elevated in rank are the ones who know how to work well with others, and come up with creative ideas and practical solutions.

5. Do I like to travel?

One of the perks of working in the hospitality industry is taking an active part in the tourism sector. There are innumerable job opportunities that hotelier aspirants can seek. The number one hotel chain in the Philippines, Astoria Hotels & Resorts has multiple properties strategically placed all over the archipelago.
